Finlands first battery-powered hybrid ferry, Elektra, is preparing to enter into operation, servicing the route between Nauvo and Parainen in the Turku archipelago. The hybrid ferry is a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation option for the archipelago, said Siemens Finland CEO, Janne Öhman. Emissions and pollution can be reduced by using electrical transportation solutions. Elektra is a good example of such solutions. The technologies and solutions for furthering sustainable development already exist. Siemens will provide the technology for the new vessel, which includes two 900kW propeller engines, two 530kWh lithium batteries, and three 420kWe diesel generators. Acquired by Finferries, Elektra will operate its route every 15 minutes and charge its batteries at both ends during loading and unloading in around five minutes. With its length of almost 98m and width of 16m, Elektra will be Finlands biggest road ferry, capable of carrying up to 90 cars at a time. It will replace two smaller, 60m vessels on the route.
